INTERIM MUSIC DIRECTOR
We are looking for an interim Music Director who will help us transition into a new phase of our music ministry at Leaside United Church as a part of our current Missional Development process. Leaside United Church (LUC) is a welcoming and affirming congregation in the Leaside and East York community in Toronto. The Mission of Leaside United Church is to grow a caring and vibrant spiritual community that embodies God’s unconditional love following the teachings of Jesus and takes responsibility for being co-creators of a world that works for all. At present the Music Director leads the Chancel Choir and supports the leadership of a junior choir and youth jazz band. We are seeking a Music Director who will celebrate both traditional and contemporary music and inspire our choir as well as congregational singing. What a great time we had in London, ON, April 27-29, 2018! A huge thank you to First-St. Andrew’s United Church for fabulous hosting – it was a memorable weekend.
Your Music United executive is working as fast as possible to settle on a location for next year, so stay tuned for details as they emerge!
The Hymn Society seeks a qualified and passionate individual to provide executive leadership as we enter our second century and work to expand our services to all those who value congregational song.
During the Music United meeting this weekend in London, the role of MU in promoting new musical works by its members seemed to become a hot topic. It was noted that the Music Sharing section of the MU website hadn’t been added to in years (although I wonder if that’s because it’s not obvious on the site how to go about actually doing this – but then, perhaps I missed the instructions). So in the interests of reviving this tool, I will see if this posting can actually be directed to Music Sharing. I’m not sure if I’m doing this properly but will let everyone know once I find out for sure.
I’ll start by a contribution arising out of last week’s tragedy in Toronto. The attached pdf is of a song I wrote a number of years ago in response to school shootings in the US, but is equally applicable here. There are major spiritual questions to be addressed by such events and it is my conviction that our hymnody needs to reflect that. I realize that the idea of using our song to probe and express our faith is controversial, as the blander the song is, the more likely it is to be adopted by ministers and congregations. But does that not do a disservice to our faith, if not raise the prospect that our faith has nothing to say our our song. So in singing about this tragedy, are we not called to go beyond a mere expression of grief, but to offer answers to questions such as Why? Where do we find consolation? How should we respond? Where is God in all of this? That is what I ask you to consider in this song. Scriptural references and other songs can be found at my church’s website www.crossroadsunited.ca/spirit http://www.crossroadsunited.ca/spirit/Shaken.pdf
The position of music coordinator at Trinity United in Grimsby will soon be available. This role offers some flexibility as our volunteer musicians readily cover one Sunday each month. Compensation range is $800 to $1000 per month for about 35 hours of commitment.
We value a diverse music program. At a Sunday service you might hear a traditional choir, a contemporary band, our English handbell choir, a ladies’ folk trio, or another combination of vocals and instruments. The music coordinator will be both a contributing musician and will have a hand in guiding our programs.
