Part-time Director of Music Ministry wanted, Canadian Memorial United Church, Vancouver, BC

Who we are

Canadian Memorial United Church (CMUC) is an open-hearted, open-minded Affirming faith community in Vancouver, BC that takes the message of scripture seriously but not literally. We are committed to the full inclusion of all people and invite and encourage individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, backgrounds, cultures, and abilities to apply.

CMUC is a growing, thriving, multi-generational community. We have a long history of a strong and vibrant congregation to whom we offer a heartfelt, contemporary worship experience, rooted in tradition and deeply relevant to people’s lives. Our reputation for offering exceptional musical experiences for congregants and the community at large continues to grow. Our historic building offers a stunning and versatile 400-seat space.

A major renovation to the chancel in 2015 included a full lighting and sound upgrade. The excellent production capabilities made for an exciting transition to streaming in 2020. We take pride in our professional quality live-streamed worship services, made possible by our strong team on both sides of the camera.

Who we seek

CMUC’s music ministry incorporates a wide range of styles, from early music to gospel and world music. We are looking to hire a permanent, part-time Director of Music Ministry (DMM) to join our inclusive and collaborative team. The individual will be an outstanding musician (on piano and possibly organ), an accomplished choral conductor, and experienced in providing direction and leadership to a worship band and both professional and amateur singers.

About the position

The DMM works closely with the Minister(s) in the preparation of the Sunday morning and other worship services. He/she/they leads weekly choir rehearsals, plans and leads concerts and special events, supports the music aspect of our children’s programs, and supports the musical development of lay people. The DMM is expected to provide music at weddings and funerals.

The DMM works closely with the Sound and Media Director in support of our live-stream ministry and is responsible for the administrative aspects of the music ministry, including budgeting.

It is important that the DMM be aligned with CMUC’s emergent theology, which is explained here. The ability and willingness to compose original scores for lyrics written by others which reflect CMUC’s theology would be a great asset.

This is a 20-hour/week (this is an average as hours vary depending on the season of the church year) permanent position that is eligible for the standard United Church of Canada benefits and pension plan. Salary is by negotiation and will be guided by the RCCO salary scale for church organists and based on education and experience.

A full job description and instructions how to apply by April 30, 2021 can be found HERE.
