Music Director wanted for Humbercrest United Church, Toronto, ON

Humbercrest United Church is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable musician to fill the role of Music Director (12 hours per week). Worship and music are an integral part of our faith community. The wonderful acoustics in our beautiful sanctuary make a great setting for our Casavant organ and Steinway grand piano.

Humbercrest United Church is an affirming ministry. We are a small congregation in the west end of Toronto, seeking to be a Christian presence in our community and make a difference in the world.

Currently, we have six dedicated Humbercrest members who sing in our chancel choir. Some regular, committed paid section leads round out our choir. We also have an outstanding library of sacred music.

We are currently searching to call a permanent full-time Minister, who will lead the Worship Team. The Music Director will work collaboratively with the Minister and the Worship Committee.

The services to be provided by the Music Director will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Playing the organ/piano and directing the choir at all regular Sunday morning services of the church and services on Good Friday and Christmas Eve, plus supporting informal weekday worship events when they occur
  • Being available to play for weddings and funerals, remuneration is by separate arrangement
  • Selecting suitable choir music for the church services in consultation with the church’s Minister to enhance worship and providing music information for the weekly bulletin
  • Providing leadership for active congregational participation in worship through singing of hymns and responses – using a variety of selections from Voices United and More Voices
  • Conducting weekly choir rehearsals from September to June, inclusive
  • Attending staff and worship committee meetings
  • Ensuring proper care and maintenance of the church’s organ and pianos

Position start date: September 1, 2023

Working hours: 12 hours per week for 10 months per year (September to June)

Salary: To be calculated based on RCCO guidelines, commensurate with experience
