Music United 2009 Annual Meeting

Music United streamlines Executive Committee at Annual Meeting held in Ottawa

Music United, who held their Annual Meeting right before Worship Matters in June, held one of the most productive meetings in some time — mainly because last year there was no Annual Meeting, as the Worship Matter events were regional. This latest news is being written in June, just following the national Worship Matters event in Ottawa. It is important to share this news, with as many congregational music leaders as possible. By virtue of their music-leading activities in congregations, they are members of Music United – although many are not aware of it.

The first piece of news is the name – the United Church of Canada Association of Musicians, more commonly known as UCCAM, has officially renamed itself Music United. Information about the organization, its history, and activities is being updated on this website, so visit regularly and find out what the Executive Committee are up to. Please leave a message so that your visit can be noted and your membership can be acknowledged.

The fact of the matter is that there are several thousand church musicians providing music leadership in United Church congregations across Canada. Providing a network, resources and assistance to its entire membership continues to be a primary goal and challenge for Music United. This has never been easy, but given the ease of contemporary means of electronic communication, the potential for creating a viable network of far-flung members has never been greater.

Here is a list of Music United’s new Executive Committee and its Regional Convenors, those regions still based on Conference boundaries. Future plans are to appoint Presbytery Representatives, in an attempt to broaden the network and establish closer contact with all the musicians working in every congregation.

More Voices goes to third printing!

More Voices goes to third printing!

The More Voices Development Team is pleased to announce that More Voices has gone to a third printing, and warehouses in Kelowna, BC and Etobicoke, ON should be receiving new stock by the end of July (2009). Both the pew edition and the Accompanists' Edition have been re-printed. Other new related products include a vinyl book cover for the pew edition, which helps to prevent the covers from tearing away from the coil binding. Several designs of presentation plates are available for inside front covers. There is also an art poster version of the Burning Bush cover, designed by Margaret Kyle, available through UCRD or Wood Lake Publishing.

South of the border, the Presbyterian Church-USA has joined the More Voices project and come on board as a partner-publisher. New copies of the books will bear the imprints of United Church Publishing House, Wood Lake Publishing, and Westminister John Knox Publishing.

More Voices is becoming widely recognized as one of the most exciting hymn resources available in North America today. Good work, Team!

Music United Annual General Meeting

It's time to celebrate the accomplishments of our wonderful ministers of music, and to chart a course for the future.  Our Annual General Meeting will be held at Dominion-Chalmers United Church in Ottawa, beginning on Wednesday 17 June at 9:30 a.m. and winding up at noon on Thursday 18 June, just prior to the start of Worship Matters.

Everyone interested in music in the United Church is welcome to attend all or part of these meetings.  Come to share your ideas, or simply to learn more about exciting developments in church music across the country.  We will certainly be discussing the proposed new Designated Ministries in Music, as well as ways we can improve networking with and service to our members from coast to coast to coast. There will be opportunities to worship and make music together, as well as a forum to share concerns and hands-on techniques in developing vibrant music programmes in churches in a wide variety of contexts and situations.

For further information, contact any executive member or regional convener, listed on the Contact Us page.

Blessings,

David Melhorn-Boe, Co-Chair

Choir Gowns sent to Africa!

Great news, the network is working!

From: Janice and Hugh Hopkins

hj.hopkins@sympatico.ca

The choir of Zion-Memorial United Church, Carleton Place,

Ontario, has received a gift of new choir gowns. We would like to give

our existing gowns to a choir, or choirs, who need them. We have 40 red

gowns with white stoles, in good repair and in a number of sizes that we

can send if recipients can cover the cost of shipping.

Janice Hopkins reports that the choir gowns they had to give away

are now on their way to Africa, via the USA.

Great news, the network is working!

UCCAM Chat – March 2009

HEH! – I trust all is as it should be with you!!! The new year is well underway and the work of the church is moving to the time central to our faith – Easter! So many things to do and so little time to do them!

I have sent out a request for you to submit highlights of events at your place of worship. Having heard from no one, I ask again. I think others would like to hear what’s happening with you. This letter will find you at the start of Lent and the next won’t happen until after Easter celebrations SO, SEND ME A SHORT SYNOPSIS OF YOUR EXPLORATION OF ‘RESURRECTION’- whether personal or in your faith community!

Carol Zacharias

REFLECTION/ QUESTIONS

How can we change focus from the melody and harmony to the text? This is one of the biggest lessons for me. I’m all about rhythms, melody and harmony. That’s what feeds my soul. And in the last few years, it’s the words that roll around in my brain after Worship and/or in times when I can’t sleep (I’m surprised every time that happens). Choosing music for my Junior Choir that is ‘ just right’ for the theme of the day is the most challenging part of my work. My references may have suggestions but that does not guarantee that any of them will match the direction of the scriptures of the day. BUT, the work must go on, so I keep trying.

I use the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum a lot! In S of S Vol. 6, Roddy Hamilton wrote, “If more theology is learned in song than in sermon, and more people take part in singing than in praying, and we learn to sing the faith before we learn to live the gospel, then what is sung in one of the most important decisions for worship leaders”. Although that’s a most terrifying concept, they are words to live by.

NEWS/RESOURCES

There has been news on the horizon about CD’s for accompaniment of hymns in VU for churches that don’t have musicians to play. 2 are now available, both are from Proper Time and they are recorded in alphabetical order according to hymn tune, eg. Track 1 – Abbot’s Leigh – VU pgs. 104, 260, 443, 512. So immediately you see track 1 will cover 4 hymns. There are some from MV. They are played by Lydia Pedersen – she plays some on the organ but many on piano, such as best fits the music. They are $19 each plus S&H with around 20 hymns on each CD. Look for them at Book Displays from UCRD (Conference of MNWO ) to save you S&H costs.

AND – Bruce and Cheryl Harding are touring across country again. They start May 25th thro’ June 1st, then again June 6th thro’ June 22nd; and on their return through this area, August 17 to 31st, 2009. If you would like to have them come to your church, contact “Evensong Administration” <admin@evensong.ca>

“Evensong on Tour” <admin@evensong.ca> they would be glad to hear from you! If this doesn’t work, try their website. ALSO on the horizon is the accompaniment copy of MV. It is reported to be available in February. It sells for less than $40 and will be available at Conference.

REMEMBER TO SEND NEWS OF YOUR EASTER CELEBRATIONS Blessings, Carol

Help is available for search committees and musicians!!

For search committees, drafting a job description for a church music position can be difficult unless you have information regarding hours required to perform tasks and other critical issues. For musicians, understanding your rights and responsibilities when working in a church environment can make the difference between feeling alone or feeling supported in your work.

Music United:UCCAM has produced a great resource to help with all of these questions: The Music Ministry in The United Church of Canada, available from UCRD. And if you can't find the information you need in this publication, then feel free to contact your Regional Convenor and tell him or her what you need to know. That's what we're here for!

“…church musicians are…the ‘pneumatic organs’ of the body of Christ” — Bill Kervin

Quote from Rev. Dr. William Kervin in a sermon "The Breath of Life" at the RCCO College Service in First Presbyterian Church, Edmonton, August 2007 (used by permission)

Rev. Dr. William Kervin in a sermon "The Breath of Life" at the RCCO College Service in First Presbyterian Church, Edmonton, last August (2008), started off with:

" 'The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it.' (John 3:8) – not a bad definition of a cipher." He quoted the Episcopal preacher Barbara Brown Taylor who says: "All the air that ever was is all contained within the sealed atmosphere of this fragile blue planet. The same ancient air just keeps re-circulating."

Bill continued: "We are sharing in the primordial, the breath of God, which is also the breath of extinct dinosaurs, and was somewhere, a baby's first breath, and someone's dying breath. Right now, you are sharing the air of Miriam dancing and Mozart making music – which is the same air that speaks from the mouth of a pipe when you press down on the key…. It's all connected. It is 'inspiring'."

He suggested that "church musicians are the Lungs of the Church, the 'pneumatic organs' in the Body of Christ. And the people of God need skilled and sensitive musicians to help us breathe more deeply God's breath of life in our worship and our work…Doesn't it feel good to be….breathing together with peoples of other cultures and contexts in a diversity of musical styles and genres, metaphors and languages? This is how church musicians can help the Body of Christ increase its lung capacity, and help us breathe more deeply and broadly God's breath of life."

Baritone Christopher Bowman and pianist David Chafe are thrilled to announce that their

debut CD 'Over Hill and Valley' has just been awarded "Classical Recording of the Year"

at Nova Scotia Music Week 2008.  'Over Hill and Valley'is now a multiple award winning

disc – Christopher and David were awarded "2007 Classical Artists of the Year" by Music

Newfoundland and Labrador.  They were unable to attend the awards ceremony in Pictou County

this past weekend, as Chris was busy with the Halifax Camerata Singers recording a CBC "Choral

Concert" broadcast (to be aired on Radio 2 on November 16th), and David was in Gander, NL, where

his latest CD of Christmas music was nominated for a Music NL award (such is the life of busy

musicians!).

Christopher and David would like to thank Music Nova Scotia and its members for this honour!

They are absolutely delighted by this recognition and look forward to their next concert collaboration

early in 2009.

'Over Hill and Valley' features two song cycles – the beloved "Songs of Travel" by Ralph Vaughan

Williams and Gerald Finzi's beautiful work "Earth and Air and Rain".

If you would like to purchase a copy of this award-winning CD, please contact Christopher Bowman

at cjbowman@eastlink.ca or David Chafe at dbchafe@gmail.com.  You can also visit www.davidchafe.ca

Hi all

A new song written by Keri Wehlander (Editor of Creating Change, which will be released this fall under our CopperHouse imprint) and Bruce Harding (Managing Editor of More Voices) has just been chosen as the winner of a song search competition at the annual meeting of the Hymn Society.

Congratulations to Bruce and Keri (this is the third hymn text Keri has written to win an award this year!)

See the official announcement below.

Mike Schwartzentruber, Wood Lake Publishing, Inc. www.woodlakebooks.com

Begin forwarded message:

Dear Hymn Society President and Search Entrants,

On behalf of the Executive Committee I can now announce that we have a winner in the search for a new congregational song on creativity as a gift of God. The judges have selected a song titled “The Spirit Sings” (first line: “The Spirit sang creation’s birth”) with text by Keri Wehlander of Nanaimo, British Columbia, and music by Bruce Harding of Surrey, British Columbia.

The admirably-experienced judges for this search were Dan Damon of Richmond, California, Mimi Farra of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and Bert Polman of Grand Rapids, Michigan. We are grateful to them for their careful work

This new congregational song will be premiered next week at the Annual Meeting of The Hymn Society, and it will be published in the Autumn issue of THE HYMN.

We are grateful to each of you for taking part in this search, and we hope you will continue your creative work for the benefit of the congregations where you worship. We look forward to your participation in future Hymn Society searches.

Sincerely yours,

Carl P. Daw, Jr.
