During the Music United meeting this weekend in London, the role of MU in promoting new musical works by its members seemed to become a hot topic. It was noted that the Music Sharing section of the MU website hadn’t been added to in years (although I wonder if that’s because it’s not obvious on the site how to go about actually doing this – but then, perhaps I missed the instructions). So in the interests of reviving this tool, I will see if this posting can actually be directed to Music Sharing. I’m not sure if I’m doing this properly but will let everyone know once I find out for sure.
I’ll start by a contribution arising out of last week’s tragedy in Toronto. The attached pdf is of a song I wrote a number of years ago in response to school shootings in the US, but is equally applicable here. There are major spiritual questions to be addressed by such events and it is my conviction that our hymnody needs to reflect that. I realize that the idea of using our song to probe and express our faith is controversial, as the blander the song is, the more likely it is to be adopted by ministers and congregations. But does that not do a disservice to our faith, if not raise the prospect that our faith has nothing to say our our song. So in singing about this tragedy, are we not called to go beyond a mere expression of grief, but to offer answers to questions such as Why? Where do we find consolation? How should we respond? Where is God in all of this? That is what I ask you to consider in this song. Scriptural references and other songs can be found at my church’s website www.crossroadsunited.ca/spirit http://www.crossroadsunited.ca/spirit/Shaken.pdf
