Port Nelson United Church in Burlington, Ontario seeks a Director of Music due to the
upcoming retirement of the incumbent. This position is 25 hours/week, paid at RCCO scale and including full benefits and continuing education allowance, and is open September 1, 2022.
As an integral part of the staff team, the Director of Music works closely with the Lead Minister and all program staff to help the congregation and community experience a deeper sense of God’s presence through the ministry of music. In recent years the music program has grown to include an SATB choir of 30+ voices with paid choral scholars, three active handbell ensembles, a children’s ensemble that sings periodically, and many classically trained musicians in the congregation who regularly share their gifts as soloists, instrumentalists and accompanists. The Director of Music should be an accomplished musician with strong interpersonal and communication skills that can be used to build upon the established program while bringing new ideas and energy for the future.
Resources include a 3-manual, 55-rank 1962 Casavant organ, a Yamaha model C-7 grand piano, a 3-octave set of Malmark handbells, a large and balanced choral library, plus recently renovated office, rehearsal and teaching space. The choir has typically offered two major annual events: A Christmas carol service, and a spring concert, both of which attract large community audiences of 250+ people.
Port Nelson is an active suburban congregation of about 700 members situated at the west end of Lake Ontario, just 45 minutes from downtown Toronto and with easy access to public transportation routes. With a large online presence, we also recently completed a $3.7 million renovation to our building to further enhance ministry. Core values are Affirming, Caring, Growing Spiritually, and Reaching Out. Cornerstone programs include summer music camps that attract 150+ children, and outreach ministries in support of food security.
