St. Andrew’s United Church in Cochrane is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic part time Church musician.

The Church Musician enriches the congregation’s worship and spiritual life through music. In partnership with the Minister and Worship Committee, the Church Musician is responsible for leading and directing music for worship services.

This is a part time position (estimated 10 hours a week). Fixed hours are 7 pm to 9 pm Thursdays for choir practice, and 10 am to noon Sundays for choir practice (10 to 10:25 am) and church service (beginning at 10:30 am). The remaining hours can be scheduled during the week to suit the individual.

We have an 18-member choir, a Yamaha Studio grand piano and a Baldwin organ.

Our church home is in the center of Cochrane. Alberta, and we have been an integral part of the community since March 1909 – remaining as a downtown church since our congregation’s beginning.

St. Andrews sanctuary has absorbed the prayers of generations for over a century. We are more than a building – St. Andrews is about the people. We celebrate life events with the sacrament of baptism, joining by marriage all who love, and honoring those who have died.

For a hundred years we have found our communion with each other and with God. For a hundred years we have marked the anniversaries of our lives and the changing seasons of our community.

Our life together has taught us how our life with God makes it possible for us to love each other more deeply. It is a gift of God that we have been called to hold this church as a sacred trust for generations yet unborn.

The Church Musician will:
Work with the Minister in selection of anthems and other service music.
Lead choir in rehearsals and worship services.
Be willing to use both traditional and contemporary music styles and explore new music, and be open to new forms of musical leadership in worship.
Fulfill role of service accompanist.

Qualifications/Competencies/Education/Experience

The Church Musician will:

Exhibit strong music leadership skills

Work independently, be responsible and self-managed.
Have high keyboard competence
Have an advanced level of music education (university or conservatory).
Experience as a choral director would be a great asset
Be competent in, and comfortable with, both traditional forms of worship music and
contemporary and emerging forms of church music

Remuneration/Benefits:

Salary is based on education and experience guidelines of the Royal Canadian College of
Organists Continuing education expenses are reimbursed, not to exceed budgeted amount.
The Church Musician has the right of first refusal for playing at weddings, funerals and memorial services. Remuneration for these services is payable to the Church Musician and is separate and in addition to Church Musician’s salary.
Remuneration and benefits will be reviewed annually by the Finance committee and Ministry and Personnel committee
Three (3) weeks of vacation will accrue each year.
