Sacred Song Invitation!

Music United of The United Church of Canada is pleased to announce an international invitation to hymn writers.

We are looking for a sacred song which celebrates God and creation. It is to be child-friendly with possible suggested actions (repetition like rhythms or movements for the chorus and/or verses for example), and suitable for singing during congregational worship on Earth Day 2012 and beyond.

We are looking for an original text and tune, and may be a composition of one person or of a team.

All language must be inclusive and, preferably expansive.

The winning entry will receive $500.00 and Honourable Mentions will be named.

Entrants should provide four copies of each submission without the entrant’s name on them. Please provide a covering letter with your name, address, email, telephone number, and the title of your entry or entries. All entries will be acknowledged within two weeks of receipt.

All entries must be submitted by February 1, 2012. Entries will be judged by a blind process involving a panel of three judges selected by the Executive of Music United. The decision of the judges will be made by February 27, 2012 and is final.

Only one winning entry is anticipated, but the judges may decide to split the prize among several co-winners. The judges reserve the right not to select any hymn as the winner.

The sacred song selected will be announced publicly after the winner is notified. Each entrant will receive notification of the selected song and a copy of it.

The composer will retain copyright of the entry, with the understanding that The United Church of Canada has the right to use the entry in perpetuity within the denomination including being posted on Music United’s website as a free downloadable PDF , and possible publication in the United Church worship resource Gathering.
